Fitness & Photography...and My High School P.E. teacher!

He was my high school P.E. teacher, and I think every girl in my class had a secret crush on him…OK so there were only 8 of us but still when Mr. Scott walked in we all stared…and then quickly turned away and giggled when he noticed.

Yes that was my high school…a graduating class of a whoppin’  17 total…so when it came to school or town sports we had to get creative for players.  That meant co-ed hockey teams,  mixed ages for basketball, and we traveled from one rural town to another for track, volleyball & softball.

I’m not saying I am the most athletic person, I mean no scholarships or bursaries were awarded to me in high school (although did I really have a chance in small town Saskatchewan)?? But I enjoy sports and find myself to be a weeeee bit competative.   And I’m certainly no fitness guru however I do value exercise.  Whether it’s running, cycle class, P90X, Crossfit, weightlifting, or a turbo-kick dance class, there is something so beneficial physically , mentally & spiritually to exercise.  It makes you want to eat better, it magically puts things in perspective and no matter how much it hurts it always makes you feel better.

Keeping up with a regular exercise routine, no matter how varied it may be, is super important for me and my photography business.  I think on average I do at least 100 squats while photographing a wedding not to mention carrying my camera(s) and gear around all day…oh and usually doing it in high heels (great for the calves).   On a family session I am usually running with the kids, laying on the ground, or acting like a crazy person to ‘TRY’ and say ‘TRY’ to keep people laughing.

And yes, here I look more like the referee than the player...

In my personal life, staying fit of course helps me keep up with my girls.  I mean power shopping and Wii Dance are super important too!  As a new year begins and many resolutions are being made, mine probably fall in the same category as most.  Enjoy life, keep fitness a priority, and find balance where it often feels chaotic.  Photo credit:: Lonnie Webb
