That One time I Wanted to be a Writer...

You know the greeting cards that say everything you are thinking and the person you get them from double underlines everything as if to make up for not handwriting anything but their signature at the bottom…well that’s NOT me.  I purposely buy blank cards so I can fill it with thoughts and emotion and words from my heart.

I have to admit I used to be better at writing & sending cards than I have been recently.  My husband learned quickly and is very good at filling a card (in full) as are my children, even if most of them are taped with lots of construction paper shapes lining the outside…I will take it!  With most of my family living in Canada, birthdays and special occasions take some planning with snail mail…at least 10 days in advance.  Well with facebook and email I have become a slacker…cards are fewer and far between but words still race around in my head.

Just when I thought I could write Hallmark cards, I gave up and started photography instead.  (Not really but hey it sounded good).  I started writing more and more as I started photographing… little blurbs to go with each photoshoot, including a more detailed engagement and wedding story.  It made me listen to people more and really try to retain their story rather than just having menial conversation.

Now comes in the part where I wish I would have read more books. Books teach you how to write without even knowing it.  The ebb and flow of the words, the flowery descriptions and gargantuous verbiage…instead I try to recall the details of the story, throw in a bit of my humor and somehow make it so someone might read to the end of the page…

Regardless of all the descriptions and fancy wording I think the most important thing is that I stay true to me and write from the heart…in return I know people will do the same.  If you ever get a card from me know that it will be full of hand written love…and for anyone who has ever sent me one…THANK YOU…you know me better than you think!
